Important Announcement:

Deprecation of Basic Authentication in Exchange Online

This is to fortify the security of your apps and data to protect against attackers that capture user credentials stored or saved on your user’s device. Basic authentication is an outdated industry standard, and sometimes makes enforcing multifactor authentication (MFA) complex.

What this means for you?

Beginning 1st October 2022, client apps using the protocols below will not be able to connect to Exchange Online using Basic Authentication:

  • EWS (Exchange Web Services).
  • EAS (Exchange ActiveSync).
  • RPS (Remote PowerShell).
  • Offline Address Book (OAB).
  • Outlook for Windows and Mac.

Next Steps

Switch to Modern Authentication (OAuth 2.0 token-based authorisation) before October 1, 2022 to get uninterrupted service and provide better and more effective user authentication.
